BRESLAVIA: the city of the one hundred bridges

  Market Square

We have departed from the airport of Malpensa, after a hour and half of flight we have come in the small airport of Breslavia, after having withdrawn our baggages, we have drawn to the first automatic teller machine found inside the airport. To reach the inhabited center, the airport is distant from the city, we have taken a bus, very comfortable, because it has brought us really next to our hotel. Breslavia is the chief town of the Low Slesia, it is a city rich in works of art and works of architecture. Its development, since the most ancient times, its position is owed to, in fact it connected the south-western europe with that north--oriental.

In 1335 it passes under the dominion of the Czech crown, and from 1526 it passes under the monarchy of the Asburgos. The five hundred art, with renaissance and mannerism, they influence a lot the town, sculptures and paintings can be admired. The Baroque one arrives late because of the war of the thirty years (1618 - 1648). In 1740 the Slesia is annexed to the Prussia, all the medieval fortifications are demolished on order of Napoleone, beginning to develop the urbanism of the city, the arrival of the railroad of it goes faster the development. Breslavia is progressively changed, in 1945 it had already been destroyed the 70% of the city constructions. Today Breslavia counts around 650.000 inhabitants. Comes in the historical center, we are amazed from the great and marvelous Market Square, it is the heart of

of the city and it is one of the greatest squares in Poland, to the center of the square there is the building of the Town hall, there are here the most important buildings, the House to the Griffons, the House to the gold Sunand that of the Seven Electors. In front of the building of the Town hall there is a column in stone, where up to the end of the seven hundred one, the bodily punishments were performed. The square is also famous for the color of the buildings that surround it, manifold they are the shops and the places that embellish this district. We have walked for the center of Breslavia, we are always moved there with our legs, there is no need to take the half public or taxi, the distances to be crossed are really brief. The cost of the life is low, in comparison to ours, this gave us

the possibility to eat out, breakfast, lunch and supper, every day, and then every evening we have frequented a different place whether to drink a good cocktail and to rest us from the long walks. The most important discos, place of meeting of the young people, is in the Market Square, they are a lot of it, a neighbor to the other. Breslavia is an university center, in fact during the day or the evening we met a lot of boys and girls, the middle age is seemed low there, perhaps note for the presence of all these students. The city is crossed by the river Oder, they are present a lot of channels, that it seems divides the town in so many parts all connected ones among them from bridges of every kind, from those more modern to those more ancient and characteristic, from here Breslavia is nicknamed "the city of the one hundred bridges."

In the Plaza of the Salt there are some stands that sell flowers, open to every time, this they make it the most colored and most romantic square. Our long walks have allowed us to see, from external, a lot of monuments and works of art, have met the building of the university that it's reflect in the Oder river, the Room of the Market, the Theater of the work, the Island of the Cathedral, the cathedral of S. Giovanni Battista, the station, the business center "Kameleon", the jail, the Bridge of Grunwald. Our suggestion is to also sojourn in the immediate proximities of the center and to eat in the typical inns so that to be able to taste the dishes typical of the Polish cuisine, the evening it doesn't need to get scared if some person meets you some happy, as
