Placed to 791 meters altitude on the Subasio mountain, to alone 4 kilometers from Assisi, the hermitage of the Jails of St. Francis was the place where the homonym monk and his followers withdrew him to devote themselves to the prayer and the meditation. In the past this place had become of ownership of the Benedictine monks, that to givew up to St. Francis to allow to keep to him and to strengthen his own faith. The hermitage is inserted in a wood of secular holm oaks and it is surrounded from numerous caves and from so many small chapels, where anchors the believers today they bring themselves to pray. Arriving from the road that salt the Subasio mountain, he continues thin to once in masonry, that marks the entry to the Chiostrino of the Monks, a triangular terrace that leans out to precipice on the ditch of the jails.

To the extremity of the cloister there are two doors that conduct to the refectory of the monks and the Church of Saint Maria of the Jails. Above to the refectory there are the residences of the monks. From the convent a steep stairway going down reaches the cave of St. Francis, surrounded from a luxuriant wood of beech trees. Famous it is the history of St. Francis that inside the cave it began to speak with some birds perched above a holm oak in the immediate proximities, today on the same tree by now become a secular plant lives a colony of white doves.
