Small town of the Tuscan, in the province of Arezzo, situated to 494 meters altitude, Cortona dominates the Val of Chiana. In the past it was one of the twelve centers of the Etruria, in 310 to. C. it was under the Roman dominion, hands today still the signs of the art and the style in Rome. In the 450 d. C. it passed under the dominion of the Goths and in the XIII century it became a free commune, escaping itself to the power "perugino." In 1258 it passed under the Aretinis, but these governed for three years, in fact the people of Cortona was helped by Siena to free them of it. In 1325 it became dominion of the Casali, following a popular insurrection it passed under the dominion of the king of Naples, that the revenges in Florence in 1411. |

The epoch etrusca has left some evident traces, verifiable in the rests of boundaries and in the numerous graves. Turning for the town very important works of art can be admired as for instance the thirteenth-century Building Passerini-Riddles, the church of St. Francis to ogival plant, the church of St. Domenico of the first years of the' 400 with the portal in Gothic style. Also the renaissance has left the sign to admire the stupendous Saint Maria of the Graces to the Calcinaio, the building of the Captain of the People and the theater Signorelli.
